it depends on what your definition of cheap is. A good starter digital camera for school would be in my opinion a Nikon D40x while they still make it. With a kit lens, you could get one for about $550 - $650. Or you could go with the Canon Rebel xti. If you are getting a point and shoot, I actually love Canons. I am a Nikon guy, but I think Canon owns the point and shoot market hands down. Good luck
